KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has launched a large-scale crackdown on illegal immigrants and visa abusers, mirroring recent enforcement drives in the Philippines and Vietnam.
The Home Ministry said the operation targets foreigners who overstay their visit visas, work illegally, or violate immigration laws.
Hundreds Arrested in Nationwide Raids
According to official sources, hundreds of foreigners were arrested in recent weeks during coordinated raids in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, and Johor Bahru.
Authorities said the campaign aims to strengthen Malaysia’s immigration policy and curb the growing trend of “fake tourism” — where individuals enter the country as visitors but engage in unauthorized employment.
An Immigration Department officer confirmed that several foreigners, particularly from other Asian countries, were found working or running businesses illegally while on tourist visas.
Some overstayed their visa period and continued to remain in the country despite multiple warnings.
Government Issues Stern Warning to Tourists
“Malaysia remains a safe and welcoming destination for genuine tourists, but those who misuse the visa system will face serious consequences,” an officer said.
The government has instructed all foreign tourists and workers to keep their visas, work permits, and travel documents valid at all times, or risk arrest and deportation.
Foreign Community on Alert
The crackdown has created unease among Malaysia’s expatriate and migrant communities.
Many foreign workers and visitors say they plan to exercise greater caution when changing jobs, extending visas, or traveling internally.
Immigration experts believe the move is vital to protect Malaysia’s economy and international reputation, ensuring that only legal and skilled workers contribute to the country’s workforce.
