KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has announced plans to restore the 18.7-kilometer railway line between Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang, which connects directly to the Thailand border. The project, valued at RM264 million (around USD 63 million), is set to begin next year.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative will be carried out under the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC), with the procurement process expected to start in the first quarter of 2026.
The rail line, closed to passenger trains since 1982 and freight services since 2006, will be fully revived to enable cross-border train operations to Sungai Golok, Thailand.
According to Loke, the three-year project will cover track restoration, ground infrastructure, signaling and communication systems, along with major upgrades to the Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang stations.
The move is seen as part of Malaysia’s broader effort to strengthen regional connectivity and boost trade and tourism ties with its northern neighbor.
