Melaka police have dismantled an online fraud syndicate operating as a call centre and arrested 16 individuals involved in scamming victims in Ecuador through fake job offers.
The raid took place at a premises in Taman Paya Rumput Perdana, Tanjung Minyak. According to Melaka Police Chief Datuk Zolkafli Mokhtar, the suspects include six local men and ten foreigners, aged between 16 and 38.
Investigations revealed that all suspects worked as call centre operators for the syndicate and were paid approximately RM4,000 per month by the group’s mastermind.
The operation targeted victims in Ecuador by contacting them through WhatsApp and Telegram. The suspects would lure victims with promises of employment before directing them to fake online shopping websites selling clothing, watches and other goods. Payments made on these sites were then siphoned directly to the syndicate.
Police stated that the premises was fully equipped to function as a scam call centre, including laptops, phones and internet facilities.
Authorities have stressed that investigations are ongoing to track down the mastermind and other members linked to the network.
Police also urged the public to remain cautious and avoid responding to unverified job offers or suspicious investment links shared online.
