The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a former army chief, his two wives, and two other individuals in connection with an alleged corruption case involving military procurement.
According to MACC, the arrests were carried out on Wednesday night. The identities of the suspects were initially withheld. However, local media later reported, quoting MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, that the former army chief involved is Muhammad Hafizuddin Jantan. He was reportedly placed on leave in late December when investigations began.
MACC confirmed that a married couple was also detained as part of the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed full details of the procurement case, but investigators suspect that suspicious funds were deposited into the bank accounts of a senior military officer.
Since late last year, enforcement officers have conducted raids on several companies linked to the case. Six bank accounts belonging to a suspect and his family members have been frozen. National news agency Bernama reported that investigators also managed to block a transfer of RM2.4 million believed to be connected to the same case.
MACC stated that investigations are being conducted transparently and professionally, and assured that firm action will be taken against anyone found guilty of corruption.
