A Pakistani national was killed and another critically injured in a road accident at the Sungai Dua toll plaza in Kepala Batas, Penang. The incident occurred on Sunday night when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) skidded off the road and crashed into the toll plaza wall.
According to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, they received an emergency call at 10:43 PM. Preliminary investigations revealed that a Perodua Aruz lost control before slamming into the toll plaza structure, trapping both male occupants inside the vehicle.
Rescue officials said the front passenger was pulled out by members of the public before firefighters arrived and was immediately rushed to Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment. The driver was extricated using special rescue equipment at 11:15 PM, but medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene.
The injured passenger has been identified as 42-year-old Zafar Iqbal, while the identity of the deceased driver has not yet been confirmed. The rescue operation was completed at 12:07 AM.
Police stated that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. Video footage recorded before the crash has also surfaced on social media.
