A 34-year-old woman arrested for allegedly making an obscene gesture and spitting at a police officer in Alor Setar has been remanded for two days to facilitate investigations.
Kota Setar police chief ACP Siti Basri Siti Ali said the remand took effect today to allow police to complete their inquiries.
According to police, the woman is being investigated under three provisions of the Penal Code: intentionally insulting religious feelings, using criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out official duties, and insulting the modesty or dignity of an individual.
Media reports said the incident occurred yesterday at a private company office in Mergong, Alor Setar, where the suspect allegedly assaulted a co-worker. Two police officers who responded to the report found the woman, an employee of the same company, causing a public disturbance at the premises.
Police said officers attempted to calm her down, but she continued shouting, scolded the officers, made an obscene gesture at one of them, threw her MyKad towards a police officer, and allegedly uttered insulting remarks about Islam.
The woman is also accused of spitting at a police officer and several colleagues present at the office. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
