Laborers and drivers account for the largest share as overseas jobs continue to play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy and remittance inflows.

    Islamabad, June 21, 2026:

The number of Pakistanis seeking employment abroad continued to rise during 2026, highlighting the growing importance of overseas job opportunities, foreign remittances, and international labor markets for the country's economy.

According to official data released by the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE), a total of 278,000 Pakistani workers registered for overseas employment during the first five months of 2026. The figures reflect the sustained demand among Pakistanis for job opportunities abroad, particularly in sectors such as construction, transportation, and logistics.

The data shows that low-skilled and semi-skilled workers accounted for the largest share of registrations. Among them, laborers represented the biggest group, with 171,206 workers registering for overseas employment during the January–May period.

Drivers also remained in high demand in international labor markets. Official statistics revealed that 52,652 drivers registered to seek employment opportunities abroad. Industry experts say the continued demand for drivers is largely driven by labor shortages in transportation, logistics, delivery services, and construction-related sectors across the Middle East and other regions.

The report further indicates that the construction, transport, and logistics sectors continue to be the primary employers of Pakistani workers overseas. As a result, professions linked to these industries recorded significantly higher registration numbers compared to many other occupational categories.

In addition to laborers and drivers, a considerable number of skilled workers also registered for overseas jobs. These included cooks, technicians, engineers, and individuals from various technical and vocational fields. However, despite their importance in the global labor market, highly skilled and professional workers still represented a relatively smaller proportion of total registrations.

Economists note that overseas employment remains a critical pillar of Pakistan’s economy. Every year, millions of Pakistanis working abroad send billions of dollars in remittances back home. These remittances provide financial support to countless families while also helping strengthen the country's foreign exchange reserves.

Furthermore, remittances play a significant role in supporting domestic consumption, improving household incomes, and contributing to economic stability. For many families, income earned by relatives working overseas serves as a primary source of financial security.

Despite the increase in registrations, experts believe the growth rate of overseas employment in 2026 appears slower compared to previous years. One of the key factors behind this trend is the tightening of immigration regulations and the rising rejection rate of visa applications in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

For decades, the UAE has been one of the most important destinations for Pakistani workers. However, recent changes in visa policies and immigration procedures have reportedly affected employment opportunities for Pakistanis in certain sectors. Consequently, these developments have influenced both registration and worker departure figures.

Labor market specialists emphasize that Pakistan must continue investing in technical and vocational training programs to remain competitive in the global workforce. They argue that workers equipped with modern and in-demand skills are more likely to secure higher-paying jobs and better career opportunities abroad.

In recent years, governments and labor-related institutions have introduced various initiatives aimed at improving workforce skills and expanding overseas employment opportunities. These efforts focus on enhancing vocational education, strengthening technical training programs, and aligning workforce capabilities with international market demands.

Experts believe that preparing a more skilled workforce will not only improve the global competitiveness of Pakistani workers but also increase the country's remittance earnings in the long term. As international labor markets continue to evolve, specialized skills and certifications are becoming increasingly important for securing overseas employment.

The latest figures suggest that overseas employment remains a key pathway for economic advancement for hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis. At the same time, remittances continue to play a crucial role in supporting Pakistan’s economy and maintaining foreign exchange stability.

As global demand for skilled labor grows, policymakers and industry stakeholders are expected to place greater emphasis on workforce development to ensure that Pakistani workers can continue benefiting from international employment opportunities.
